Senior Manager, Direct Tax

 

to join our Tax & Customs team in Houston, Texas.

 

 

Your role in our team:

 

In this highly impactful leadership role you will provide oversight for all income tax matters of Neste group companies in the U.S., encompassing strategic tax planning, complex tax reporting and compliance, proactive tax controversy management, and the identification and optimization of tax opportunities. This requires comprehensive expertise in interpreting and applying U.S. federal and state tax law, including collaboration with tax consultants and advisors. Responsibilities include conducting thorough research and analysis of complex tax matters, proactively identifying potential tax risks and implications, and ensuring compliance with all relevant tax laws and regulations. While the primary geographic scope is the U.S., this role may also include oversight of direct tax processes across the Americas.

In this role, you will:

 

  • Serve as a key member of Neste Group’s global Direct Tax team, actively driving regional income tax, transfer pricing, and tax credit strategies and initiatives and managing related tax processes.

  • Provide expert guidance and leadership on complex tax issues, including managing and resolving tax audits and maximizing the utilization of available tax credits.

  • Direct and oversee income tax reporting and tax accounting processes, ensuring accuracy and correctness of the income tax position.

  • Lead income tax compliance processes, including managing the preparation and filing of all federal, state, and local tax returns.

  • Spearhead the investigation and analysis of intricate tax issues, leveraging expertise and collaborating with external tax consultants to develop optimal solutions.

  • Strategically manage federal and state tax audits, advocating for the company's position and minimizing potential liabilities.

  • Develop and implement strategies for the application and optimization of tax credits and incentives, maximizing their financial impact.

  • Proactively monitor changes in tax laws and regulations, assessing potential impacts to the company, and recommending and coordinating the implementation of necessary adjustments to income tax processes.

  • Provide expert interpretation and guidance on income tax rules and regulations to internal stakeholders.

  • Contribute to business projects, providing strategic counsel on the direct tax implications of new business initiatives, including scenario planning and actionable recommendations.

  • Develop and deliver in-house tax training to enhance internal knowledge and compliance.

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with tax authorities, external tax service providers, and other key partners.

  • Oversee property tax processes, collaborating effectively with tax service providers.

 

 

You will work closely with a variety of internal stakeholders, external tax service providers, and tax authorities. As a member of a global team, you will report to the Head of Direct Tax based in Finland. Within the U.S., you will collaborate closely with the local finance team.

The best combination to succeed in this role

  • Advanced degree in Taxation, Accounting, Tax Law

  • A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in tax consultancy, in-house corporate tax function, and/or experience with tax authorities, demonstrating a deep understanding of complex tax issues and proven expertise in the practical application of both tax law and tax accounting principles.

  • Extensive knowledge of corporate income tax and federal and state tax laws and regulations.

  • Exceptional self-leadership, strategic time management skills, and the ability to manage multiple complex priorities effectively.

  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills, coupled with a proactive, results-oriented mindset and a commitment to professional development.

  • Proven ability to investigate and resolve complex tax matters, analyze data, and develop innovative solutions.

  • Strong team player with the flexibility and collaborative skills to achieve shared goals.

  • Demonstrated project management expertise.

  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills, both written and verbal.
