You will play a key role in building, shaping and further developing the Energy & Utilities discipline within the Rotterdam refinery. We are looking for an Energy & Utilities Specialist to join the Renewable Products Refining Technical department in Rotterdam (Maasvlakte). Operating within the Technical Department - the home base for Process Automation, Process Improvement Engineering, Asset Development, and the Laboratory - you will serve as the definitive authority on energy optimization. The main internal stakeholders you will work closely with are the Maintenance, Operations and Compliance departments, and on a global level other refineries and peers in these locations.

 

Ownership & Responsibilities

You will command the site-wide ISO 50001 certification and lead the European Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) compliance. 

 

  • Energy Optimization: Own the energy balances. Monitor, analyze, and optimize the energy consumption of production units and utility systems.

  • Performance Tracking: Develop and maintain Energy Performance Indicators and dashboards to track progress against site energy goals, corporate targets and ISO 50001 standards

  • Troubleshooting: Provide expert technical support to the Operations and Maintenance teams to resolve energy-related inefficiencies or equipment bottlenecks

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with Dutch environmental regulations and EED audits

  • Innovation: Collaborate with R&D and Global Engineering to pilot new technologies for CO2 capture or low-carbon hydrogen integration.


The best combination of experiences, skills and background to succeed in this role is: 

Background

  • Bachelor degree in a relevant engineering discipline, for example chemical engineering;

  • Ideally an experienced Process Engineer with at least 7 years of relevant work experience in petrochemical and/or industrial production;

  • Previous or current role as energy management specialist, energy efficiency engineer or environmental engineer or similar preferred;

  • Experience in Renewable Processes is an advantage;

 

Technical skills

 

  • Verifiable track-record in identifying, leading and executing energy improvement initiatives successfully;

  • Awareness of the ISO50001 and European Energy Efficiency Directive;

  • Understanding of EU ETS

  • Expertise in using and developing industrial monitoring and reporting systems;

 

Mindset Soft skills

  • Strong and effective stakeholder management, strong influencing skills and communication on a global scale;

  • Analytical mindset, structured and data-driven - ability to set and lead with Energy Performance Indicators

  • You are tech-savvy, a self starter, proactive and you take initiative

  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in Dutch is a significant advantage for local site coordination
