Neste Netherlands is part of the Finnish parent company Neste. The different plants in the Netherlands produce renewable fuels. Together with 250 colleagues we are working everyday to operate, maintain, and improve the plants in an efficient and safe manner. 


To further extend our HSSEQ department we are looking for an Head of HSSEQ for our location in Rotterdam Maasvlakte.


The purpose of this role is to support and ensure that activities, programs associated with Renewable Products (RP) HSSEQ strategy are supported and developed in the right manner and organised in a way to be fit for purpose in daily business covering the whole HSSEQ organisation of Neste RP in the Netherlands.
The Head of HSSEQ Netherlands supports their RP stakeholders to be compliant with the legal, permitting and Neste requirements and therefore helps to reach the set targets while striving for continuous improvement together with their organisations in the field of HSSEQ.


Key Accountabilities

  • Member of RP HSSEQ Leadership Team and member of relevant management teams
  • To represent the HSSEQ strategy and the related expertise  to support decision makers in strategic decision and related subsequent business activities
  • Support of the Dutch RP organisations and their sites in continuously developing their HSSEQ Management System and  to meet the legal but also Neste requirements in their day-to-day business by providing expert services to the internal customers.
  • Leading a group of HSSEQ experts at Neste in Netherlands and being accountable for the team performance and team development including target setting, reporting, activity tracking, the effectiveness and continual improvement of the team cooperation with the various stakeholders, prioritising and developing (continual improvement) relevant practices to support the various stakeholders, supporting the implementation of Neste HSSEQ practices in the local organisations
  • Support the implementation of the HSSEQ processes at the affected sites and organisations and to lead parts of the implementation which have been agreed together with the respective stakeholders
  • Provide expertise to analyse and to report the HSSEQ performance of the respective RP organisations areas and to prioritise development areas together with the involved stakeholders



Other responsibilities:

  • Support the further integration and continuous improvement of HSSEQ within the RP organisation in the Netherlands in daily work processes. By using leadership principles, the stakeholders should be guided and if needed coached within HSSEQ 
  • Support of new initiatives at RP (e.g. “I act safe”), together with the involved HSSEQ experts and stakeholders of the respective organisation
  • Support of regional managers responsible for HSSEQ by providing needed additional expertise on an as-needed basis.
  • Active contribution in Neste level HSSEQ development by actively networking also with  other HSSEQ experts at RPP sites and within the corporate organisation, e.g. on common practices and processes, etc.
  • Support in maintaining compliance with HSSEQ processes within BUs, incl. planning and conducting audits and support for the further development of sufficient and effective auditing processes



You will report to the Head of HSSEQ Renewable Production and will work closely with the corporate HSSEQ organization in Finland, RP HSSEQ organisation in the Netherlands, leadership teams and line management involved for the Dutch sites and other Neste common functions such as Sustainability, Risk Management, Procurement.

Keys to success in this role


The best combination of experiences, skills and background is:

  • MSc relevant to this role with at least 10 to 15 years suitable experience in HSSEQ (incl. Operations and Projects), incl. solid technical expertise
  • Ability to lead, manage and develop a team of diverse experienced HSSEQ professionals in an efficient way and motivate them to perform at their best
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, manage and drive implementation of above mentioned requirements in a key position across different organisations
  • This role expects, but also enables, a high degree of personal freedom to actively shape and support the HSSEQ performance and strategy of the affected RP organisation, always keeping the “fit for purpose” approach in mind
  • Proven capability of reaching results and driving change with sustainable improvements
  • Strong competence with HSSEQ knowledge and good understanding of relevant international practices and local laws and regulations and also Neste internal standards
  • Able to work in a structured way is expected; prior experience in using management tools is an important prerequisite
  • Operational experience would be a plus, preferred experience of oil refining or petrochemicals operations and related HSSEQ requirements, processes and practices
  • Good communication skills and good ability to work in English and Dutch(written and oral)
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organisation and stakeholders
  • Experience with proven results of working in an international organisation
  • Leadership and influencing skills



In order to be able to perform in this role as independently as possible, pronounced technical expertise in the areas of Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality is essential. 


The workplace will be located in Rotterdam Maasvlakte
